Summer Gods Tour

Summer Gods Tour

Introduction

The Summer Gods Tour brought together two of the most influential names in the alternative and pop-punk landscape for a run across North America’s biggest stages. Documenting a show of this magnitude is about more than just clicking a shutter. It is about capturing the weight of decades-old anthems while keeping pace with the modern high-fidelity production that fans expect in 2025. My role was to provide comprehensive tour photography that captured the cinematic energy of Third Eye Blind and the high-velocity violin-driven performance of Yellowcard. Working on a tour of this caliber means stepping into a well-oiled machine where every movement on stage is choreographed to the millisecond. My strategy was to document the transition between the nostalgic connection of the crowd and the technical precision of the artists. I focused on the dual nature of the show by capturing the wide-angle atmosphere of the venue and the intimate sweat-on-the-fretboard details of the musicians. Yellowcard’s set was a study in movement as I tracked the legendary high-energy violin solos that have defined their sound for over twenty years. When Third Eye Blind took the stage the focus shifted to a more atmospheric and moody visual language. I worked to ensure that the final gallery of images didn't just look like a concert recap but felt like a definitive record of the tour's specific visual identity.

Challenges

Challenges

The primary challenge of this project was ironically the incredible skill of the tour’s lighting designers. The lighting team was so well-versed at their job that the stage was constantly flooded with hyper-saturated colors and blinding strobe sequences. While this makes for a jaw-dropping experience for the fans it creates a technical nightmare for a photographer trying to obtain crisp shots with proper exposure.

I spent the entire night fighting to balance the extreme highlights of the LED walls against the deep shadows of the stage. The light was changing so fast that I had to rely on pure instinct and technical muscle memory to keep the images sharp and the skin tones natural. It was a constant dance with my camera settings but I came out all right in the end. The final shots managed to harness that aggressive lighting to create a hyper-dynamic look that actually helped tell the story of the show's intense production value.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day the Summer Gods Tour was a massive win and a highlight of my time on the road. Navigating the complexities of professional lighting design while capturing iconic artists is what keeps this job interesting.

I emerged from the pit with a body of work that honors the scale of the tour and the legacy of the bands. It was a good time all around and the final assets stand as a testament to the fact that even when the lights are fighting you a discerning eye will always find the shot.
