Sacai

Sacai

Introduction

Sacai is the definitive leader in Japanese high-fashion innovation. Known for its complex mixed-fabric construction and hybrid silhouettes, the brand demands a visual approach that is as layered as the garments themselves. I led the creative and art direction for a campaign that spanned two iconic locations: Burbank and Tokyo. This project was a comprehensive exercise in international team management and technical styling. My objective was to translate Sacai's avant-garde design language into a cohesive digital story that resonates across both Eastern and Western fashion markets. Directing a multidisciplinary team across two continents provided a unique opportunity to explore the versatility of the Sacai aesthetic. In Burbank I worked with actress Caylee Cowan to capture the brand’s lighter side. We focused on a monochromatic white palette that played off the crisp California light to highlight the intricate textures of the fabric. For the Tokyo segment of the capture I collaborated with Shoko Palm to lean into the city's nocturnal energy. Shoko was styled in an all-black ensemble that mirrored the sophisticated urban landscape of Japan. My role involved every facet of production from the initial creative concept to the final video edits. I managed the on-set talent and production crews while overseeing the styling of these complex pieces to ensure they remained the focal point of every frame. Directing this team while working alongside such high-level talent was a highlight of the process and allowed us to push the boundaries of traditional fashion photography.

Challenges

Challenges

The primary hurdles for this project were rooted in sourcing and logistics. Sacai pieces are highly sought after and complex to handle which made sourcing specific product parts across different regions a significant task. Coordination with showrooms and internal teams had to be perfect to ensure we had the right looks for each location.

Location scouting presented a separate set of trials. We needed environments that complemented the hybrid nature of the clothes without overpowering the delicate details of the mixed fabrics. Managing these moving parts across different time zones while maintaining a consistent visual identity required a high level of adaptability. We overcame these obstacles through meticulous pre-planning and a sharp eye for detail that ensured every location in both Burbank and Tokyo served the brand’s narrative.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

This campaign was a testament to the power of a unified creative vision and effective team leadership. Working with talent like Caylee and Shoko to bring the textures of Sacai to life was an incredible experience that yielded world-class results. We delivered a suite of photo and video assets that successfully translated the brand's Japanese roots for a modern international audience.

This project proved that with the right direction you can bridge the gap between two worlds and create something truly noteworthy.
