One of the most compelling aspects of this project was documenting Allie’s experience as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field. She spoke candidly about the intimidation she felt early in her career and the struggle to find her place in the industry. As a filmmaker I had to find a way to translate those internal hurdles into a visual narrative that felt both vulnerable and empowering.
We also touched on her personal battle with "people pleasing" and her ongoing journey to find a balance between being the creative decision maker and providing her clients with exactly what they want. Capturing these nuanced conversations while maintaining the high-energy atmosphere of a working tattoo shop required a constant adjustment of my production style. I had to ensure the camera was present enough to get the "badass" shots of the work being done while remaining quiet enough to let the genuine stories of her life and her clients take center stage.

This documentary is a testament to the power of artistic resilience. Allie Barringer is an artist who has earned her place through years of study and a refusal to let fear call the shots. By providing a professional record of her work I helped solidify her reputation as a leader in the next generation of tattooers.
The response to the film has been incredible with viewers feeling empowered by her voice and her commitment to the craft. This project stands as a reminder that when you lead with passion and a heart for connection you don't just make art. You make history.
Next projects.
