Grace Kelly is a boundary-blurring artist who has redefined what it means to be a modern jazz icon. When she brought her tour through Indiana, I was brought on to document the experience through a blend of photography and narrative copy. We followed her journey from the legendary, low-lit stage of the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis to the academic and high-energy atmosphere of Ball State University. My objective was to show the 317 and the broader Midwest the person behind the horn—an artist who is as dedicated to music education as she is to her own virtuosic performances. Working with Grace was an unbelievable experience because she is remarkably genuine and kind. My work focused on translating that personality into a professional visual and written archive. I captured the technical precision of her saxophone play alongside her roles as a vocalist and songwriter. The project required a dual approach. At the Jazz Kitchen, I focused on the "after-hours" editorial feel of a classic jazz club, highlighting the passion and sweat of a live set. At Ball State, the focus shifted toward her commitment to education and her ability to inspire the next generation of musicians. Through photography and carefully crafted copy, I mapped her footprint across the state, ensuring that her passion for her craft was evident in every frame. Meeting her was an honor, and her energy made the process of documenting her journey feel effortless.
