Sports Team's "Maybe When We're 30": A Shift Towards Introspection
Sports Team has unveiled "Maybe When We're 30," a new single that marks a shift towards introspective themes of settling down, ahead of their third album, "Boys These Days," slated for a May 23rd release via Distiller Records/Bright Antenna. The song, accompanied by a self-directed video, reveals a sonic departure for the band, drawing comparisons to the nuanced soundscapes of Pulp and The National, a testament to producer Matias Tellez's influence, known for his work with artists like Girl In Red and Gracie Abrams.
Lyricist Rob Knaggs frames the song as a reflection on the transition from youthful exuberance to the realities of adulthood, humorously dedicating it to Brooklyn Beckham. He articulates the initial thrill of band life, a seemingly endless cycle of travel, music, and camaraderie, juxtaposed with the realization that peers are now embracing marriage and domesticity. This shift in perspective prompts a contemplation of simpler desires: aging gracefully, acquiring a pet, engaging in online commentary, and navigating the minutiae of suburban life.
"Boys These Days," recorded in Bergen, Norway, and following their previous Top 3 albums "Deep Down Happy" and "Gulp!," delves into the complexities of contemporary existence, particularly the relentless cycle of social media, which the band refers to as "the churn." The album promises to be a commentary on modern life, filtered through the band’s characteristic blend of wit and observation.
To support the album's release, Sports Team has announced a series of in-store performances across the UK, beginning May 21st, offering fans an intimate experience with their new material.
