You do not casually stumble into a Kishi Bashi show. You either buy the ticket because you want to be transported beyond the busy work day, or because your child got sick and gave you a last minute ticket…(Looking at you two parents from last night). Last night in Broad Ripple, Kishi Bashi came and completely sold out Forty5's venue to a packed backroom Watching him build an entire sonic universe out of vocal loops and a single violin is like watching a wizard who refuses to hide his hands. You see every layer being stacked. The pluck of the string, the lyrical wonder into the microphone, and the sudden explosion of symphonic pop that absolutely rattles your brain. The crowd was shoulder to shoulder and entirely locked into the frequency. I was shoved somewhere between the soundboard and a very enthusiastic couple spilling their drinks, trying to capture the sheer joy radiating off the stage.
