The pandemic was a strange time, filled with uncertainty and isolation. But it also led to some unexpected discoveries. One of mine was Winnetka Bowling League. A friend at the time introduced me to their music, and I was immediately hooked by their catchy melodies and relatable lyrics. Their music became my soundtrack to lockdown, providing a much-needed escape from the chaos of the world.

When I heard that Winnetka Bowling League was opening for Mother Mother at the Egyptian Room, I knew I had to go. As a huge fan of their music, it was an incredible opportunity to experience their songs live. To be honest, the last time I saw them and worked with them, I didn't even know who they were as they were just openers playing down the street at the Hoosier Dome. Waiting to get into the venue, I tried my best to discover who the headliner, Mother Mother, was, and the majority of the responses were "you know, that TikTok song." To be honest, I am behind on the times, and the amount of times I have had someone refer to a band by a "TikTok" is on more hands than I have. So, I knew from that most of this crowd would be younger and have fewer hip problems than I do.

As I walked up by the stage, I couldn't help but notice their old gas station quarter gumball machines and the DVD selection of a Marvel movie, adding to the already mixed-matched aesthetic. The night started with Winnetka Bowling League, and they did not disappoint. Their energetic performance was the perfect way to warm up the crowd with songs like "Come To The Beach" and my wife's favorite, "On The Five." The band's lead singer, Matthew Koma, had a powerful voice that filled the room. The rest of the band was equally talented, creating a driving sound that was both catchy and thought-provoking, but the focus was on Koma's witty remarks and fun culture.

After Winnetka Bowling League's set, Mother Mother took the stage. I had never heard their music before, but I was immediately impressed by their unique blend of indie rock and pop. The band's lead singer, Ryan Guldemond, had a captivating stage presence, and his voice was both powerful and vulnerable. The rest of the band was incredibly talented, creating a rich and textured sound. Mother Mother played a mix of old and new songs, and the crowd was singing along to every word. The band's music is full of catchy hooks and thought-provoking lyrics. It's the kind of music that you can't help but listen to on repeat.

One of the things that I loved most about Mother Mother's performance was their energy. They were clearly having a great time on stage, and their enthusiasm was contagious. The crowd was feeding off of their energy, and the atmosphere in the room was electric. As I made my way back to my wife at the back of the room, she was all but tired from their set. As much as we loved Winnetka Bowling League, we couldn't stop thinking about Mother Mother. We drove home listening to their music, and while it may not still be our thing typically, we couldn't deny their stage presence and the melodic skills found on every track. If they come to your town, don't be proud. Buy a ticket, grab a beer, and watch this spectacle.
