Finn Wolfhard unveils his second album Fire From The Hip. Read about the new single I’ll Let You Finish and his upcoming concert at the Hi-Fi Annex in Indy.
Finn Wolfhard is growing up, and he is doing it loudly. The lo-fi bedroom aesthetics of his debut, Happy Birthday, have been scrapped in favor of something far more expansive. His new album, Fire From The Hip, is due on July 10, and if the lead single "I’ll Let You Finish" is any indication, he has traded his tape machine for the ghosts of rock history.
Wolfhard is moving into a "hi-fi" space that feels less like a side project and more like a definitive statement. He describes the shift with a cinematographer’s eye: if the last album was shot on 16mm, this one is 35mm. It is bigger, wider, and far more intentional. Recorded at the legendary Pachyderm Studios on 24-track reel-to-reel tape, the record draws a direct line to the gritty, analog swagger of Exile on Main Street.
The catalyst for this evolution was the road. After touring his debut, Wolfhard realized the alchemy he shared with his backing band was too good to leave on the stage. He moved back home to Vancouver and started writing with the specific goal of capturing that live chemistry. These are mostly full-band live takes, where small imperfections are left in as proof of life. It is a record that favors spontaneity and atmosphere over the cold precision of a modern studio.
Nostalgia remains his primary fuel, but the vantage point has shifted. He explores the turbulence of growing up and the fluid nature of identity, particularly on the track "Nice to Meet You Again." As Wolfhard puts it, he feels like he is constantly coming of age, and each record is a reintroduction to a new version of himself.
Indianapolis gets a front-row seat to this reintroduction on July 28th when he hits the Hi-Fi Annex. Presented by MOKB, this is the kind of show that thrives on the exact raw, communal energy Wolfhard chased during the recording sessions. The Annex is an outdoor space that lives for the kind of immediate, connected performance found on this new album. It isn't about the celebrity on stage; it’s about the noise the band makes and how the air feels when the sun goes down over Fountain Square.
The tracklist hints at a record that is self-aware but serious about the craft. If you are looking for the polished perfection of a child star, look elsewhere. Wolfhard is coming to Indy to play rock and roll with his friends. You should probably be there to hear it.
