Circa Waves and the Undulating Rhythm of Life

Circa Waves, the Liverpool indie rock band, have released 'Death & Love Pt. 1,' the first half of a two-part album project via Lower Third/[PIAS]. This nine-track collection arrives after a significant period for frontman Kieran Shudall, who underwent heart surgery in early 2023, leading to the cancellation of live shows. The album, self-produced by Shudall and engineered by Matt Wiggins (known for his work with Adele and Lana Del Rey), reflects this experience.

'Death & Love Pt. 1' includes previously released singles like ‘Like You Did Before’, ‘We Made It’, and ‘Let’s Leave Together’. The album's title itself suggests a thematic focus on mortality and connection, themes likely influenced by Shudall's health journey. The band has not explicitly stated how this experience shaped the album, leaving listeners to interpret the music in their own way.

Circa Waves formed in Liverpool in 2013. Shudall met bandmates Sam Rourke and Plummer at Liverpool Sound City, later connecting with guitarist Joe Falconer. They released their debut double A-side single, "Get Away/Good for Me," in 2013. Their second single, "Stuck in My Teeth," gained traction after being named Zane Lowe's "Hottest Record in the World."

The band has toured extensively, including supporting slots with The 1975 and The Libertines, and has played major festivals like Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds. Their previous albums include 'Young Chasers,' 'Different Creatures,' 'What's It Like Over There?,' 'Sad Happy,' and 'Never Going Under.' 'Never Going Under,' released earlier this year, reached Number 1 on the UK Independent Album Chart.

Now, Circa Waves are preparing for a North American co-headline tour with Friday Pilots Club, starting in April. The tour will take them across the US and Canada. The band has not commented on how their live performances might be impacted by the personal experiences that informed the album's creation. This tour will be the first opportunity for North American fans to hear the new material live.

The release of 'Death & Love Pt. 1' marks a new chapter for Circa Waves. The album's themes of life and mortality, combined with their established indie rock sound, are expected to resonate with listeners. The second part of the album project is anticipated, though details of its release remain unconfirmed.
