Yaffa Golden Coffee: A Taste of Yemen in the Heart of Indiana

Before I found my “person” and before I started this whole agency/news outlet model, I had another lover. A love that was dark, nutty, and more than life giving than most people in Hamilton County find on a Sunday morning. From its most simplest and humble origin, to its robust and rounded flavors, my addiction to coffee was and still is almost at the center of my daily activities and I find myself having a constant affair with every bag of beans I can find around town. When my wife and I look at our grocery bills we can always see the coffee beans near the top just right before protein, and after mass produced sugar branded fruit leathers (I am not perfect). I am most likely more on the cynical and judgmental end when it comes to coffee. As someone who spent most of their 20s trying multiple coffee shops just in a day to further my own understanding and palette of this unmeasurable world of caffeine I know when I have found a coffee worth driving out of my house for. When I heard there was another coffee shop opening in Fishers, Indiana I knew I had to at least try it out so I knew to either give a side-eye, or something more maybe more quaint and polite to people who asked. Nestled in the heart of Fishers, Indiana, Yaffa Golden Coffee is more than just a coffee shop; it's a portal to the rich tapestry of Yemen culture. Founded by a family deeply rooted in their heritage, this haven offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, inviting patrons on a sensory journey through the world of coffee and middle-eastern hospitality.

The shop's origins are as captivating as its brews. As Ali, the manager, shared with me, "The story started from my uncle wanting to open a coffee shop here in America. He had a friend in Yemen that has coffee. We also have coffee farms in Yemen like in Yafo." This deep-rooted connection to Yemeni coffee cultivation is evident in every cup.

Transforming a former bank into a coffee shop was no small feat mentioned the enthusiastic coffee roaster. "It took us about nine months to get this place ready," Ali explained. "There was a big vault, literally huge. We had to remove it with big machines." The result is a space that seamlessly blends industrial charm with a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Yaffa Golden Coffee is more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee. It's a community hub where friends and families can gather. "We wanted this to be a place for family and friends to come and just chill," Ali shared. The shop's commitment to exceptional service is evident in the friendly and welcoming atmosphere created by the diverse team, which includes members from Yemen, Morocco, and Egypt.

The coffee itself is a star attraction. "The coffee that we have because it's planted and farmed in high elevation, it just brings a nice different fluidness to it," Ali explained. The shop offers a variety of brewing methods, from espresso to cold brew, allowing customers to explore the complex flavors of Yemeni coffee.

One of the standout offerings is the Yaf Special latte, a unique blend of traditional Yemeni spices and Western coffee culture. "The Yaf special has turmeric, cardamom, and sweetener," Ali described. This innovative fusion exemplifies Yaffa Golden Coffee's commitment to honoring its heritage while catering to modern tastes.

Beyond the exceptional coffee, the shop boasts a delectable menu of pastries, smoothies, and juices. The focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients complements the coffee perfectly.

As Ali mentioned, "We're trying to bring the Yemen hospitality to the shop." This dedication to creating a welcoming environment is evident in every interaction with the staff. Yaffa Golden Coffee is more than just a place to enjoy a cup of coffee; it's a destination where customers feel valued and appreciated.

With its commitment to authentic Yemeni coffee, exceptional service, and a warm, inviting atmosphere, Yaffa Golden Coffee is poised to become a beloved staple of the Fishers community.
