My journey into the world of Babymetal began a decade ago in the small city of Utsunomiya, a short Shinkansen ride from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo. At the time, the J-pop scene was saturated with idol groups like Perfume and AKB48, and the rise of K-pop acts like Girls’ Generation was gaining momentum. I, like many others, was skeptical about the need for yet another idol group.

However, Babymetal defied expectations. Their unique blend of heavy metal and kawaii culture was a refreshing departure from the norm. Songs like “Distortion” and “Road of Resistance” resonated with a raw energy that transcended cultural boundaries. As I wandered the streets of Tokyo, lost in a mobile map and my IG feed, these songs provided the perfect soundtrack to my urban escapades.

Fast forward to a few years later, and I found myself at a sold-out Babymetal concert in Indianapolis. I am married now, and while my wife could not attend this performance I eagerly messaged her and let her know how excited I was to finally be able to see this band play for hometown (not theirs) show, which I had the honor to review, and take photos for. Everyone there was dressed up as if Marlyn Manson, or Gerard Way would walk out from behind the curtain at any moment and announce something prophetic. The Kami Band, providing a thunderous backdrop to the captivating performances of SU-METAL, MOAMETAL, and MOMOMETAL drove the anticipation of the crowd wild with excitement. As the lights dimmed, and the opening notes of "Distortion" echoed through the venue. I myself grinned ear to ear watching the trio belt out the lyrics “ひずんだ シハイ 恐れない 偽善者なんて 捨てちまえよ.” This performance was a great show to perhaps round off my time in 2024 at the Old National Center.
