Night Market, Elevated. The Future, Is 88Rising
Over the last weekend the Guess Jeans Campus became the closest thing to a backyard hangout session since the start of the cooler months here in LA. The 88Rising family opened its first annual Night Market Neighborhood, which was a vibrant celebration of Asian American culture and we were there to cheer on our favorite vendors, and check out what 88Rising had planned. This two-day event transformed the space into a bustling marketplace, showcasing the best of Asian night markets and Western-style flea markets.
The event featured a diverse array of food vendors, offering everything from traditional Asian dishes to innovative fusion cuisine. Attendees could sample delicious treats like boba tea, ramen, bao buns, and much more. The market also featured a variety of shopping options, with local businesses selling unique clothing, accessories, and artwork. We were so excited to hear IKI Ramen was going to be there that our team knew that before going we would need to make it a point to hit their stall by all means necessary.
Beyond the food and shopping for the most niche Pokémon collectables, the Night Market offered a variety of entertainment options. There were live performances by DJs and musicians, as well as outdoor movie screenings featuring popular films like "Big Hero 6" and "Past Lives." Attendees could also participate in fun activities like mahjong tournaments and carnival games.
The rain did not stop the overall atmosphere of the event as the community was both energetic and inclusive, with people from all walks of life coming together to celebrate Asian American culture. The Night Market was a truly memorable experience, and it's clear that 88rising has successfully created a platform to showcase the diversity and creativity of the Asian American community.
Our brilliant on-site photographer, Jody Hou, had the chance to be involved with the festivities and after returning home they described it as beyond just “well organized” and more than a “vibe.” “I could see & hear the excitement from everyone with their food & the movies, and each setups felt like eating, or catching up in a friend’s backyard,” Jody said.
While Head In The Clouds moved to the East Coast this year, we absolutely appreciated the love, and the community 88Rising gave to the LA area this last weekend. It was a heartwarming reminder that the most important connections are often found right in our own backyard. Events like these are crucial in celebrating Asian American culture and breaking down stereotypes. We look forward to the next 88Rising event, and we will be sure to travel to either coast to support this amazing, and trailblazing collective.
